VANOC and the V2010 ISU respect the right of peaceful protests and have tried to facilitate that right, while keeping in mind the need to protect the public attending the events.
The V2010 Integrated Security unit and our law enforcement partners within the police forces of jurisdiction will continue to protect the rights of Canadians to voice their opinions using lawful methods and activities, while protecting the public’s right to attend the 2010 Games.
The Canadian Charter of Rights underscores the right of individuals to peacefully express their opinions and views and to speak out on the issues. The police will uphold this right and they have a duty and responsibility to protect the right of Canadians to voice their opinions on the issues.
Demonstrations that result in criminal behaviour, the interference of the rights of others and disruptions to 2010 Winter Games activities are not acceptable and will not be tolerated. We encourage anyone who may have information about any criminal protest activity to contact the police of jurisdiction.
As with any protest or demonstration the actions of the crowd will dictate the actions of the police.
V2010 ISU recognizes that lawful advocacy, protest and dissent using legal methods are not matters of police concern.
Jurisdiction:
Protests that occur outside of the Olympic venues will be the responsibility of the police of jurisdiction. The V2010 ISU is ready to support the police of jurisdiction should the need arise and requests are made.
Protestors are free to protest in a legal manner and demonstrations any where that is legal.
The V2010 ISU protects Olympic Venues while the police of jurisdiction is responsible for overseeing areas outside of Olympic Venues and zones. While these are two distinct mandates – the planning and operations has been integrated and seamless.
Intelligence Gathering:
V2010 ISU continue to exercise due diligence in the gathering of Intelligence with respect to the security of the Games.
V2010 ISU continues to work closely with our partners in ensuring safe and secure winter Games.
Community Relations Groups:
The V2010 ISU’s Community Relations Group has been focused on engaging demonstration / protest groups in mediation and consultation in an attempt to facilitate lawful protests during the Games throughout the planning process.
We continue to reach out and are readily available to the demonstration/protest groups for consultation and information on lawful assembly.
VANOC’s Role:
VANOC assumes the role of operator and landlord of the venues during the Games. Any questions around what is or is not acceptable behaviour within the private facilities, or restricted items is best directed to them.
