Scenic marine shot of the Vancouver cityline with boats in the water

VANCOUVER: The Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security, along with other marine safety and security agencies, is responsible for the development of a comprehensive marine safety and security plan. As well, the V2010 ISU is also responsible for marine security as it relates to the venues we are mandated to secure during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Marine venue security planning is comprised of three key areas: marine patrol, the security of water side Olympic venues and the monitoring of vessel traffic within the Vancouver Harbour and Howe Sound areas.

Transport Canada has produced an information brochure that highlights the areas that will be affected during the Olympics

Partnerships/Integration

Federal/Provincial/Local agencies have joined together in partnership to develop marine security plans. Agencies include:

  • RCMP-led V2010 ISU
  • Vancouver Police Department
  • Transport Canada
  • Canadian Forces, Department of National Defence
  • Canadian Coast Guard
  • Canada Border Services Agency
  • Port Metro Vancouver

Each agency is fully committed to the integrated model for marine security. In order to ensure safe and secure games, there will be scalable but highly visible marine presence within our areas of responsibility.

Game-time Operations

Security Planners have two key goals:

  • To protect and safeguard the Games, the Olympic athletes, Olympic family and the public.
  • To minimize the impact of marine security on those who travel or work within our marine domain.

During the 2010 Winter Games marine security zones will be in place around water-side venues.

Some areas designated for marine security purposes will be for the exclusive use of safety and security vessels, while other areas will be subject to marine traffic restrictions. However, these other areas will be accessible to registered and authorized vessels.
